Rainbow Report on Bravery

February 27th 2012 05:13
rip'n'roll Michael O'Brien
First they ripped'n'rolled, now they're civilly unioned

Bravery takes many forms: can be as simple as admitting to yourself that you need to get some help, speaking out in public for what you think is right, asking the person you love to stay with you for the rest of your life, or getting up on a stage alone in front of an audience and trying to make them laugh.

You all know Alex Greenwich of Australian Marriage Equality, tirelessly fronting the media and always managing to look red-carpet ready while he does it. He’s been in Canberra, and we’re gonna be very brave and ask, if settling the leadership doesn’t save Labor, how are we going to get marriage with Tony Abbott as PM?

Queensland couple Michael O'Brien and Anthony Gillespie are pretty brave, too – not only are they the couple in that Rip’n’Roll safe sex ad that so upset Wendy Francis of the Australian Christian Lobby, they’ve now become only the second couple to tie the knot under the state’s new Civil Union Act. But they may not enjoy their union for long, leader of the LNP Campbell Newman has just promised, you guessed it, the Australian Christian Lobby he’ll repeal the Act if he’s elected.

There's a petition here to ask Newman NOT to repeal the act.

There’s a new organisation around called The Community Brave Foundation, which aims to harness social media to offer support to troubled young people online and in real time via social media. The founder of this radical new venture is Rami Mandow.
Really Long Link

And finally, it takes a very special kind of brave to be a stand-up comic. It takes even more to be a gay stand-up comic AND get into a shitfight with fellow comic Corinne Grant, over vaginas. But that’s what Tom Ballard has done, after Grant accused gay male comics and drag queens of being anti-woman and offensive with it. For too long, she said, we women have let them get away with stuff we don’t accept from the straight guys, and it’s time it stopped. Tom tells us his side.

Oh, and a couple more bit of crazy brave: my usual tech crew, TJ & Kezza, are hosting their very own live rock show Tuesday night as JOY 94.9 & Rude Bookings Presents 'JOY ROCKS LIVE' at the Workers Club 51 Brunswick St , Fitzroy, VIC Australia 3065 tonight 07:00 PM - 11:30 PM with Damon Smith & The Quality Lightweights, Shadowqueen, The Refunds. So the studio reins have been handed to a very brave man, Scott Tetley. Be kind.
