Comment by Greg Adkins
As I write this the ALP National Conference is debating relationship policy and, you guessed it, there were NO significant protests outside the conference.
Where are the activists taking trains, buses, aircraft to press for our rights at the bvest time and at the best place to influence the current governing party of this nation as they meet to discuss the policy that will underpin all new legislation for some time to come? An empty silence where it matters most.
Well having gone to Sydney myself over the last two days to lend my weight to internal lobbying leading up to the vote today, I'm proud to have seen labor activists within Rainbow Labor, from all factions of the ALP, coupled with many hetero members of the ALP who are long-time G&L rights supporters, all working very hard to develop new policy and get it through the conference. In an hour or so we'll see the result of their considerable efforts.
Whatever the outcome, it would have been a far greater result if the protests at Melbourne's Fed Square and elsewhere had moved to Sydney and outside the conference for the last couple of days and especially today. Fed Square might be a great way to make some noise but the noise is 963km away from where it needs to be heard!!
The only noise I heard came just after 7pm on Friday night when the time passed for lodging of policy amendments for today's session on relationships. The sight of a former gay Melbourne lobbyist, now moved to Sydney, a tall man, standing over a much smaller woman, a Labor Senator from NSW, a woman who goes home every night to her female partner and constantly challenges OUR issues on OUR behalf in her work place, the Senate, well his demeanor was appalling. Picture this: he was using his physical presence and language to pressure and berate and physically impose his views on the senator. Put him back on the leash - but after he apologises.
I'll be challenging this man over his behaviour later today. Violence in any form - especially when a gay man is standing over a lesbian in what appears to be an attempt to berate her into submission - is unacceptable. How can he do this? Does his organisation know this is his style? I suppose he gets away with it as this debate shows he is only representing personal views and is not interested in engaging the broad masses, now has his org truly engaged the complete rainbow of views in our diverse GLBT community.
And it would have been good to have his single narky voice drowned-out by thousands of people making a considered, powerful yet respectful statement at the doors of ALP National Conference over three complete days adding considerable weight to the brilliant efforts of Rainbow Labor delegates and activists working had-in-hand with hetero supporters within the ALP conference.
Yes, I'll drop down to Federation Square after presenting on "Detours" (JOY 94.9 at noon today) but I'll be constantly reminded that its too little, far too late, and we'll all be 963km away from where we should be.
