Bushfire appeals, lesbian mums on the Rainbow Report tonight

February 19th 2009 03:40
Bushfire

The gay community, like everyone else, has gone to work raising funds for a whole range of appeals relating to the bushfire, and it’s sparked considerable debate.

Should we be giving to the Red Cross, when the Red Cross blood service won't let gay men give blood?

What about the Salvos or St Vincents - aren't they tied to anti-gay churches?

A veritable shedload of money has been raised to help people, but what about animals and in particular wildlife?

With all that in mind, joining me in the studio tonight is Felicity Brinschwitz. She's been working at the Healesville relief centre, and plans to lead a contingent of Victorians to Mardi Gras under the banner Australians United, raising funds for bushfire victims.

The ALSO Foundation have just cancelled a planned forum for rural gays and lesbians because of the fires – they are taking part in a bushfire appeal, too, along with Joy. CEO Lyn Morgain explains the decisions.

Taking a break from bushfires, we’ve a report from Sydney station 2SER on the case of the lesbian mums who got two babies when they only wanted one.

And we’ll be popping up to Queensland, where it’s been floods, not fires, to check on the situation there with Miles Heffernan of QNews.

With me in the studio, the irrepressible Cathy Anderson, and just in case anyone thinks there aren’t enough lesbians on the show tonight, Andie Noonan from Southern Star.

Plus Kaye Sera remembers the time, when she was still in a training bra I imagine, when her family had to flee the bushfires with only whatever bone china they could carry.

Tonight 7-8pm on Joy Melbourne 94.9 / www.joy.org.au.
