Rainbow Report on Homophobia

This week Thu Apl 30 7-8pm AEST Joy 94.9 Melbourne, streaming live at www.joy.org.au The Rainbow Report looks at Homophobia.

Mention IDAHO to most people, and they think you’re talking about a US State that’s famous for potatoes and not much else. And no, it’s not the one where same-sex couples started marrying this week – that’s IOWA.

But our IDAHO is the International Day Against Homophobia, which is getting to be quite a big deal overseas but to date, Australia’s contribution has been pretty feeble. Greg Adkins hopes that’ll change this year – he joins us in the studio to explain what’s happening in Melbourne and how you can join in and have some fun.

We’re often accused of seeing homophobia where it doesn’t really exist, but is it magnifying the effect of the recession for some of us? Some of the first things companies drop to save money are gay-supportive initiatives and gay and lesbian staff. Harley Dennett of the Sydney Star Observer has the story.

Despite the name, Queensland could fairly be described as a homophobic state. with no relationship recognition, or recognition for same sex parents. The age of consent seems equal at 16, but anal intercourse with anyone under 18 is a criminal offence under a 1990 "sodomy law”. GLBTI Queenslanders have been campaigning its repeal, but back in October the Queensland government made it tougher instead. Miles Heffernan from QNews tells us all about it.

Joining me in the studio tonight, the feisty snappy-dressing co-convenor of the Victorian Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby, Hayley Conway; the man who lobbies the pollies on our behalf, Corey Irlam, with his response to the government’s response to the 2020 summit – anyone remember that? Seems a long long time ago. And Cathy Anderson, one of the Lesbians On The Loose at LOTL magazine.

And finally Kaye Sera pays tribute to Golden Girl Bea Arthur, who died last week. I was hoping she’d say something about swine flu, so I could do an intro about a pig in a poke bonnet, but you can’t have everything.

World Youth Day on The Rainbow Report

Tonight on the Rainbow Report of Australia's 24/7/365 gay and lesbian radio station, Joy Melbourne, streaming live at http://www.joy.org.au from 7-8pm Australian Eastern Standard Time, I'll be talking about the Pope's takeover of Sydney for World Youth Day.

Ably assisting me in the studio, we have Pete Dillon, and Richard Watts, editor of local gay newspaper MCV.

There have been some truly extraordinary goings-on in Sydney because of the World Youth Day. First we had the Catholic Church refusing to be responsible for any damage their pilgrims caused to Sydney’s parks – even though the federal government has already tipped $22m into this event, and the NSW and Sydney authorities an astonishing $86m.

The NSW government has also made some equally astonishing regulations, making it an offence to cause annoyance or in convenience o people attending World Youth Day events, and what’s more, those powers will be in force for the whole of July.

So I thought we should look at this situation from both sides. We’ll talk to Paul Harris, convenor of the gay catholic youth group Acceptance – they’ve been banned from holding an event as part of World Youth Day.

And we’ll also hear from Amelie, of Community Action Against Homophobia, who’s organized a protest called NoToPope, which will hand out condoms to the young pilgrims as they make their way to mass with the pope.

The whole WYD event will probably become part of gay history, with accounts ending up in the Australian Gay & Lesbian Archives. Their keeper, Dr Graham Willet who lectures at the University of Melbourne, is organizing the 8th annual national gay history conference, which starts in nine days time. We’ll talk to him about the importance of gay history and the archives.

And we'll talk to Rodney Croome of the Tasmanian Gay & Lesbian Rights Group. In the wake of the results of a new survey showing half the population now support gay marriage, he says there are now members of both main parties who are getting angry at their leaderships refusal to address the issue, and some of them may be getting close to rebellion.
