Lesbian Mums

Lesbians great parents, says 22 year study

“The longest-running study into lesbian parents in the United States has found that discrimination and not the sexual orientation of their parents harms children.”

Backing up every other well-designed and reputable study into the subject, the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS) shows that the children of lesbian parents are happy, healthy and ‘high-functioning’.

The only handicaps faced by the children of same-sex parents are those created by outsiders who do not approve of their family structure.

And even the setbacks due to this prejudice, discrimination and homophobia can be overcome when the children live in communities and attend schools that are pro-actively accepting of diversity.

Those who claim they oppose lesbian parenting for the good of the children are in fact the ones causing any suffering the children experience.

“The NLLFS confirms the findings of over 40 other studies on the children of lesbian and gay parents, and supports the positions of all major professional associations on the well-being of children growing up in lesbian and gay families.”

Time for the opponents of same sex parenting to shut up and start working to overcome their prejudice – for the good of the children.

Allegro Non Troppo Sunday 11-1

September 27th 2008 08:49
This weekend I’ll be taking the Addam Stobbs seat on Allegro Non Troppo, Sunday 11.00am – 1.00pm. Although I’m not exactly ‘musical’, Addams longtime co-presenter Peter Fortey and producer Robert Brierley assure me they’ll get me through the first hour.

In the second hour, produced by Bianca Johnston, I’ll be looking at the issue of aged care for gay and lesbian seniors. A recent report by the Matrix Guild and Vintage men painted a disturbing picture of the situation for the retired members of our community and those approaching retirement.

Joining me in the studio will be two of the people who put the report together – Project Co-ordinator Jane Kent and Researcher Catherine Barrett from Latrobe University – and entrepreneur Peter Dickson, who plans to build Linton Estate, a GLBTI retirement community in the Victorian country town of Ballan.

Join me on Allegro Non Troppo on Joy 94.9, streaming live at www.joy.org.au. The program will be available as a podcast and via the community radio satellite network.

Brian McFadden’s pink stink

August 19th 2008 01:57
Bernarr McFadden
Bernarr McFadden - no (known) relation

Former Westlife boy-band singer Brian McFadden says straight men should not wear pink.

McFadden, whose former Westlife colleague Mark Feehily came out last year, said, “If you are not gay, a man should not be wearing pink," adding, "Saying pink is a form of red is the same as saying homosexual is a form of male."

Responding to a caller to New Zealand's More FM, who said that in days gone by boys used to wear pink while little girls were dressed in blue, McFadden, 28, sneered: "In San Francisco or Sydney."

Poor Delta. Your legion of gay male fans can sympathise. We all understand the attractions of a bit of homophobic rough trade. Don’t worry. You’ll get over it.

McFadden is probably trying to boost his moribund career with a new gig as a shock-jock. He’s already lined up to prat on about football, hosting Foxtel's new reality TV soccer show Football Superstar.

And John Laws old job is still vacant. He could go head to head with one of the stately homos of Australia, and fellow sports nut, Alan Jones. And make country music albums to sell to the listeners.

Someone should remind him that calling himself an artist is the same as saying that mooing over a celebrity girlfriend for profit is a form of music.

Meantime can someone get him a date with Jeff Kennett?

A Gay Marriage

July 7th 2008 03:10
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tended to ignore my own birthday, but this year I decided I would have a little celebration. Nothing fancy, just a buffet lunch on Sunday afternoon with a few of the people who matter to me. I could have invited at least a dozen more, but it’s a while since we’ve entertained and I didn’t want to take too much on.

My partner was initially angry because I sent out the invites without telling him my plans, but he came round. It saved a lot of arguments! As I’ve learned from dealing with editors and program managers, it’s better to do it first and apologise after, if necessary, than to spend hours in fruitless argument

Gays & Muslims Marriage Alliance?

polygamy
Polygamy is suddenly all over the Australian media. Where did that suddenly come from?

Keysar Trad, president of the Islamic Friendship Association, backed calls by Sheik Khalil Chami of the Islamic Welfare Centre, for polygamous relationships to be recognized in Australia
