National Pride
June 29th 2008 05:39
Every year more countries have gay Pride marches, each one unique to the character of the host nation.
In Bulgaria a protester threw a petrol bomb near the marchers, others hurled eggs and some carried clubs.
In Brno at least 20 people were injured when the Czech Republic's first ever Gay Pride parade was attacked by extremists throwing tear gas and fireworks.
3,000 marched through Jerusalem without incident on Thursday, because they were protected by 2,000 police officers
In Paris gay soccer players, police officers and bus drivers joined masses of people waving rainbow flags protesting discrimination against gay teachers and students.
In Berlin they marched from East to West, and paid homage to their brothers and sisters killed in the Holocaust.
Meanwhile in San Francisco they marched to celebrate gay marriage. Said one, "It's not this subculture. It's mainstream. You can go to Macy's to pick out your china, you can go to Shreve's to pick out your rings, and you can go to the Four Seasons and pick out your reception room."
In Eastern Europe they try to kill us. In Israel they provide almost as many police as marchers to protect us. In Western Europe we salute the past and plan for the future. In the US they provide us with new shopping opportunities.
Welcome to Pride 2008.
