Just another celebrity divorce
June 20th 2008 02:57
The split between Little Britain star Matt Lucas and TV producer Kevin McGee after only 18 months in a civil partnership will undoubtedly have the opponents of gay marriage rubbing their hands with glee
Lucas is well aware of the prospect.
A friend of Lucas told News Ltd.: "Matt is really concerned it does not do much for the image of gay civil partnerships.
"But he thinks you can't live in a loveless marriage and if it's over, then it's over."
My first thought was “What a drama queen!” Couldn’t they have stuck together for the sake of the cause?
My second thought was, why did I expect this to turn out differently to any other celebrity marriage - an impression strengthened by the reported reasons for the breakup.
Lucas is said to have been working too hard and not spending enough time at home, while McGee apparently felt left overshadowed and behind by his partners rise to fame.
Difficult as it is to picture Matt Lucas as Judy Garland, it all sounds somewhat reminiscent of ‘A Star Is Born’.
But I don’t think it tells us anything special about gay marriages – except, perhaps, that they are virtually indistinguishable from straight ones.
The couple had already been living together or four years when they got ‘married’ – and we already know that couples who live together first are apt to divorce within a short time of formalising their relationship.
It may be that they felt their relationship crumbling under the pressure of Matt’s fame, and decided to get hitched to shore it up – a strategy that seldom works.
All in all, probably just another celebrity pair who didn’t have the time or inclination to put in the hards yards necessary to make any marriage work.
Now what’s Brittney up to this week?
