stimulus package
The Australian gay and lesbian community is getting it's own government stimulus package.

The government has responded to criticism for the way it’s managed the introduction of same-sex couple equality by handing out $450k of taxpayers money.

The money is for ‘a national education campaign’ about the impacts of the 85 changes the government has brought in. We’ll be asking, is this worthwhile endeavour, or could the money be better spent?

They’re channelling $350k of it via the National LGBTI Health Alliance, a very new national body – basically a coalition of Aids Councils – which currently has only one staff member and isn’t even properly set up yet.

So they are outsourcing the job to ACON, the Aids Council of New South Wales.

But this isn’t a health issue. Is this the right channel for the money? Why is the government going this route?

We’ll be talking to Corey Irlam of the Australian Coalition for Equality, who has been heavily involved in lobbying the government, and ACON CEO Stevie Clayton.

The other $100k is going to the Welfare Right Centre to help them in their work supporting GLBTI claimants who feel they need someone the stand with them as they deal with Centrelink.

Director Maree O’Halloran joins us to explain what they’ll use the money for.

And in our regular reports from the other states – yes, there is gay life outside Melbourne – we’ll catch up with Amy Henderson from community paper Out in Perth.

Joining me in the studio tonight, the man of a thousand hats – journalist, reviewer, Fringe Festival guru, and Melbourne’s leading zombie, Richard Watts.

And the cherry on the cake – bet that’s the first time she’s been called that in a while – the first lady of lycra, Kaye Sera, who’s been sniffing around our Prime Ministers emissions.

Rainbow Report on Homophobia

April 30th 2009 00:40
Homophobia
Graphic: BBC

This week Thu Apl 30 7-8pm AEST Joy 94.9 Melbourne, streaming live at www.joy.org.au The Rainbow Report looks at Homophobia.

Mention IDAHO to most people, and they think you’re talking about a US State that’s famous for potatoes and not much else. And no, it’s not the one where same-sex couples started marrying this week – that’s IOWA.

But our IDAHO is the International Day Against Homophobia, which is getting to be quite a big deal overseas but to date, Australia’s contribution has been pretty feeble. Greg Adkins hopes that’ll change this year – he joins us in the studio to explain what’s happening in Melbourne and how you can join in and have some fun.

We’re often accused of seeing homophobia where it doesn’t really exist, but is it magnifying the effect of the recession for some of us? Some of the first things companies drop to save money are gay-supportive initiatives and gay and lesbian staff. Harley Dennett of the Sydney Star Observer has the story.

Despite the name, Queensland could fairly be described as a homophobic state. with no relationship recognition, or recognition for same sex parents. The age of consent seems equal at 16, but anal intercourse with anyone under 18 is a criminal offence under a 1990 "sodomy law”. GLBTI Queenslanders have been campaigning its repeal, but back in October the Queensland government made it tougher instead. Miles Heffernan from QNews tells us all about it.

Joining me in the studio tonight, the feisty snappy-dressing co-convenor of the Victorian Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby, Hayley Conway; the man who lobbies the pollies on our behalf, Corey Irlam, with his response to the government’s response to the 2020 summit – anyone remember that? Seems a long long time ago. And Cathy Anderson, one of the Lesbians On The Loose at LOTL magazine.

And finally Kaye Sera pays tribute to Golden Girl Bea Arthur, who died last week. I was hoping she’d say something about swine flu, so I could do an intro about a pig in a poke bonnet, but you can’t have everything.

Don’t just sit there, we love to put your views to air too, so please agree, disagree, argue, praise, whatever by emailing onair@joy.org.au - text 0427 JOY 949, or call 9699 2949.

On The Rainbow Report Thursday Night

August 6th 2008 06:45
Rainbow Reporter
Every Thursday evening 7-8pm AEST broadcasting live from Melbourne on Joy 94.9FM, streaming live at www.joy.org.au. Podcasts available on the Joy site by the weekend.

Last week we had a few things to say about Jeff Kennett, but he’s rather gone to ground since then. But the issue of gays in sport, the entrenched homophobia in sport, hasn’t gone away. In fact, if anything Jeffs intervention made it worse.
.
So we’re going to look at what’s being done to tackle the issue. We’ve got Patrick Kean, Media Relations Manager of the AFL, plus a representative of the VCFL, and maybe even a director from an AFL club - we're still working on that one!

Plus, of course, with us in the studio we'll have our resident expert, former president of Lexton Plains Football Club and scourge of sporting homophobia, Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust.

I'll be ably assisted by the lesbian journo tag team, so to speak, of Andie Noonan from bnews, and back on the show after a short break, my good friend Cathy Anderson from Mx.

And making a welcome return to Joy after an even longer absence, taking her own inimitable look Under The Bonnet of current affairs, the incomparable Kaye Sera. Yes, the thinking man’s drag queen is back!

We’ll be catching up with affairs in Tasmania with Rodney Croome and the gay blood-donation ban case, and visit Queensland in the company of Rod Goodbun

Join in any time during the show: text us on (Australia) 0427 JOY 949, or if you’re listening online, drop us an email to onair@joy.org.au. Or phone us on 61 (0)3 9699 2949 to have your say. We might even put you live to air!
